Little Duck Forge Blog

Welcome to the Little Duck Forge Blog

Lucille Scott is an artist blacksmith creating hand forged metal items inspired by nature and her love for dance and music. For Lucille the appeal of working with iron lies in the traditional role of blacksmiths, the permanence of their work and passing on this tradition to all around her.

This site contains a portfolio of my wider work and more detail for work produced at Little Duck Forge.

The main website is available at littleduckforge.co.uk which has up to date information, contact details, events and exhibition details. The site is more mobile friendly.

Blacksmithing and Garden Sculpture Course

Our Blacksmithing and Garden Sculpture course is part of the Traditional Heritage Craft Week – Bedales School, 8-12 July

Discover the art of transforming steel and glass into a bespoke piece of garden sculpture with our Blacksmithing and Garden Sculpture course, one of three courses on offer for adults at the inaugural Traditional Heritage Craft Week, taking place at Bedales from 8-12 July.

Under the expert guidance of Lucille Scott of Little Duck Forge , you’ll complete a sculpture of your own design for your garden over five days, exploring the key skills required for working with glass and steel. You’ll create a piece of fused glass before moving onto blacksmithing techniques, learning how to draw down, upset, bend, twist, hot cut and punch using hand tools to bring your sculpture to life.

Open to all – whether you’re a current parent, former parent, Old Bedalian, friend of the school, or new to Bedales – this is an exciting opportunity to learn a comprehensive range of traditional craft skills from highly experienced professionals. Lucille will be supported throughout the course by fused glass artist Elisa Dodd and Little Duck Forge’s blacksmithing apprentice Martyna Ciucka.

Little Duck Forge at the Fire and Iron Gallery

Fire and Iron Gallery was founded in 1982 as part of Rowhurst Forge / Richard Quinnell Ltd (established 1932), in response to a global resurgence of interest in forged iron as a creative medium.

Fire and Iron Gallery is known across the world as the place to see and buy the very best metalwork by leading international artist blacksmiths. Little Duck Forge is proud to be included in the gallery space and in a very short time has had an amazing amount of interest in items placed there.

We have been busy delivering sculptures and squiggle frames around the country to beautiful galleries. Luckily these are in places we love to visit making every visit a mini holiday. The galleries only have a small number of items due to space so if you wish for something specific get in touch with us at the forge. All the galleries tend to specialise in hand made pieces and art created by UK artists so if you are in the area they are well worth a visit.

Currently the Galleries include:-

  • Fire and Iron Gallery, Leatherhead
  • Salt Marsh Gallery, Lymington
  • Obsidian Art Gallery, Stoke Mandeville
  • Mill Bridge Gallery, Skipton
  • Lilford Gallery & Framers, Canterbury
  • Westgate Galleria, Margate
  • The Eclectic Art Gallery, Margate
  • Anthony Giles, The Margate Studio and Gallery, Margate
  • Saltbox Gallery, Helmsley

Squiggle Frames are not just for Christmas

Wreath making seems to be more popular than ever this year and Squiggle Frames make a great base for a Christmas Wreath. They are also great for use through the year to display finds and create your own wall sculpture.

enter image description here
Sqiggle Frame Christmas Wreath

For those of you who have escaped seeing one yet, squiggle frames are wall hanging wreaths hand forged in mild steel and finished with oil and wax. They are a great base for making all sorts of things decorative. I originally designed them as a base for Christmas wreaths but soon discovered that the shape was so pleasing it could be used all round the year as a base for different crafts. Seaside/Coastal Wreaths being very popular.

New for 2023

2023 will see our first year doing a trade show, we have exhibited in a few galleries over the years but as I was generally working on my own I found it difficult to supply them. Since early 2021 we became a team of 3, the wonderful welder Graham and the able apprentice Martyna joined me in the forge. Initially it was just a couple of days a week but in the last year they increased their hours and I have increased their training. I will add more in future newsletters about their training and blacksmiths opportunities but for today here we are on our Christmas outing in the new yellow van…..

Lucille, Martyna (the apprentice) and Graham (the Welder) Christmas 2022

Squiggle Frame

Hand forged steel wreath base.

For inspiration and to share what you have done seek ‘Sqiggle Frames by The friends of Little Duck Forge’ Facebook Page here

Description

Squiggle frames are wall hanging wreaths hand forged in mild steel and finished with oil and wax. They are a great base for making all sorts of things decorative. Originally designed as a base for Christmas wreaths it was soon discovered that the shape was so pleasing it could be used all round the year as a base for different crafts. Seaside/Coastal Wreaths being very popular.

Size: 30 x 40 cm high including the squiggle (12×15.5”) Available to buy for £25 from my Folksy Shop here

Inspiration

When I first set up the forge and we were making Christmas decorations my apprentice asked if we would be making Christmas wreaths….he had forged flowers in mind so I said no, they would be too heavy and cost a fortune!
That night I went home and berated myself for being negative and started thinking about what would be affordable and not be a liability on the doors of Portsmouth. The next morning I made a squiggle frame, that day I decorated it with green and red felt, then baubles and ribbon, then stones……and so started the life of the Squiggle Frame. I now sell them to ceramicists and weavers to make wall sculptures as well as the public who have used them to make amazing pieces of art. One customer never made hers up, after 3 years she came to me and said she had decided ‘less is more’….she loves the frame just as it is on the wall with no decoration. What will you do with yours?
